What type of local government structure do we have? Belle Plaine is a Standard Plan, Type A, Fourth Class, Statutory City. Belle Plaine has four council members and a mayor, all with equal voting rights. The mayor is elected to a two-year term, council members to alternating four-year terms. All local elected officials serve the community at-large, there are no wards or precincts. Elected officials are assisted by committees and commissions which serve in an advisory capacity.
